You know things are getting serious when a government minister calls for something to be done about the rising costs of getting to work. Most of us will remember the fuel crisis around 2005 and the continued rise thereafter but as the slow and steady rise continues is this destroying the transient nature of the UK workforce?
Since 2001 there has been a steady drop in the number of people who drive to work, since 2007, the time that I started working in Motor Trade Recruitment for Perfect Placement, I have seen the decline in the amount of miles candidates will drive to work, it used to be I was looking 30 miles from a candidate's home address now, in some circumstances, it is as little as 5 miles.
This morning's news estimated the average fuel cost being around £250 per month a rise from last year and yet salaries across the Motor Trade are not rising by the same amount, if at all.
So the question is how much would you be prepared to spend to get to work and are you finding it too much in your current role?
