Living and Working in South West England - Motor Trade Area Guide

Job seeker advice

With such a rich and diverse Automotive industry spanning all corners of the UK, we recognise that many of our candidates are willing to relocate in order to secure their dream role. While this can seem daunting at first, we’ve put together an area guide covering the key regions to give you as much information as possible in order to make an informed decision.

The South West of England is the largest geographical region in England, but with one of the sparsest population concentrations, with only 600 people per square mile, London is 3,900! The area consists of the counties of Bristol, Cornwall, Dorset, Devon, Gloucestershire, Somerset, and Wiltshire, as well as the Isles of Scilly.

The region has by far the longest coastline of any English region and is known for its rich culture and folklore including the legend of King Arthur and Glastonbury Tor, as well as its traditions and customs. Much of its stunning coastline is now protected from further substantial development because of its environmental importance, which contributes to the region's attractiveness to tourists and residents.

The most economically productive areas within the region are Bristol, the M4 corridor and south east Dorset, which are the areas with the best links to London. Bristol alone accounts for a quarter of the region's economy, with the surrounding areas of Gloucestershire, Somerset and Wiltshire accounting for a further quarter. There are large differences in prosperity between the eastern parts of the region and the west. While Bristol is the second most affluent large city in England after London, parts of Cornwall have among the lowest average incomes in Northern Europe.

Living in the area you’ll find plenty to do. From the moors and beaches, to the historic towns and picture-perfect villages there is always something to do.  From adrenaline packed sporting activities, to quiet strolls on the beaches, great shopping opportunities and even better restaurants, pubs and cafes, you can find them all throughout the region. House prices and rentals can be, in some areas, overly inflated by tourist and holiday lets and this pushes the total average for the area up. However, compared to the bigger UK cities you’ll generally get more for your money when it comes to property. The cost of living is also relatively low outside the large tourist hotspots. It is worth considering that due to its size, residents of the South West have a higher than average commute to work compared to the rest of the UK. This is not helped by the lack of motorways in Cornwall.

The Motor trade businesses are centralised around the larger cities and towns. Most areas have large business and motor parks dedicated to Automotive businesses. Automotive Manufacturers in the area include Eberspacher, Goodridge Fluid Transfer Systems and Honda UK Manufacturing.

The motor trade job market is fast paced and often competitive but our team covering the South West have the knowledge and expertise to help you secure your dream role. We recruit across all disciplines of the motor trade in this area for new and used car dealerships, commercial vehicle dealerships, bodyshops and motor vehicle accident repair centres and also agricultural dealers as well a whole host of other automotive businesses.
