Overview

Norway is a rich and prosperous country largely down to its oil, gas and energy industries. It has a relatively small population with just over 5 million people and has held the top spot for the highest Human Development Index worldwide since 2009 (this statistic is based on life expectancy, education and per capita income).  Norway is considered to be one of the most gender equal countries in the world and the government has implemented specific policies to make it easier for women to combine work and family life.

Landscape

The landscape of Norway is defined by tens of thousands of miles of breath taking coastlines. The country has dramatic mountain peaks, waterfalls, rivers, lakes and glaciers as well as its famous fjords which are huge, still blue lakes often surrounded by towering cliffs.  The west of the country is home to the largest forest and the land here is intensively cultivated. Along the coast, the fishing industries are important and there are many small fishing villages to explore. Norway is also a popular tourist destination for people wanting to catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights which are a real spectacle.

Work-life Balance

In contrast to the UK, Norwegians work to live rather than live to work. Employers offer generous holiday packages as standard and working week’s rarely exceed 40 hours. Significant emphasis is placed on personal interests, family and friends so it is not uncommon for employees to leave work early on a Friday for an extended weekend of leisure time. Working any more than this is considered to be overtime and comes with additional pay. Despite the emphasis on leisure time, Norway has far greater productivity and efficiency levels compared to the UK.

Lifestyle

The cost of living in Norway is among the highest in the world. Rent, food, drink and going out all cost more than in the UK. However, salaries in Norway are higher and everyone is paid a living wage. The is also a government tax on most goods and services in Norway known as MVA (merverdiavgift), which is charged at 25%. The local currency is Kroner. Norway and the whole Nordic region is a highly digitised society, they are on the verge of becoming a completely cashless society instead using credit or debit cards and mobile payment apps for their transactions. Norway also has one of the lowest crime rates in the world.

The Motor Trade in Norway

Public transport is less developed in Norway compared to many other European countries however they have a large road network so most people choose to travel by car. It also has the greatest amount of Electric cars in use across the world meaning that innovation in the Automotive industry to manufacture and service these cars has developed rapidly.

Essential Requirements

Our clients in Norway generally request that candidates have an NVQ 3 or equivalent in relevant vehicle repair, a minimum 3 years of experience in the role they are applying for, a valid driving licence and a clean criminal record.

Relocation Package

As part of your relocation package flights and transfers from the airport are included. Most employers will also cover your accommodation deposit plus the first month’s rent. You will receive assistance with all legal documents (Work and residence permit, Tax registration and Insurance) and a fully funded Norwegian language course if required, although English is widely spoken in the major towns and cities. You will also receive Norwegian salary and benefits. Salaries can reach up to £30 per hour depending on location, sector and experience.
