Job seeker advice

The role of a HGV Technician is a specialist role which involves carrying out vehicle inspections, services, preparation for MOT’s plus general maintenance and repairs of Heavy Goods Vehicles. A significant element of this role is that it generally involves working shifts. These could involve early mornings, day time shifts or through the night. Shifts are usually allocated on a rota basis and can vary from week to week.

Based in busy workshops, it is essential that a HGV Technician can work efficiently to targets while paying attention to accuracy and Health and Safety regulations at all times.  It is important that service repair records are kept up to date therefore a successful HGV Technician will be organised and thorough. Depending on the type of Dealership you could be working on a wide range of HGV Vehicles or specifically with one brand; in these cases full training is provided. It is important that work is always completed to manufacturer standards.

Due to the specialist nature of this role, most employers will look to take on a Level 3 / City & Guilds or NVQ qualified technician and will want someone with diagnostic experience. Having a full UK drivers licence is essential in this role and applicants with a Class 1 or 2 HGV License are considered to be sought after. This is the perfect role for a Vehicle Technician or Mechanic looking for a change in career.

Average pay for this kind of role varies significantly based on location of the workshop, experience of the individual and the type of shifts they work. Lots of employers will pay those working through the night a slightly higher salary. Pay can range between £28k and £40K for around 40 hours work per week.
