Workshop Manager / Service Manager
  • Location: Chatham, Kent
  • Salary: £35,000–£45,000 per annum (DOE) + Uncapped Bonus + Benefits
  • Hours: Monday to Friday 8:00 AM–6:00 PM, Alternate Saturdays
Our client, a reputable and family-run car garage in Chatham, Kent, is seeking a dynamic and hands-on Workshop Manager / Service Manager to lead their team and drive operational excellence. With a well-equipped workshop, experienced staff, and an expanding customer base, this is an exciting opportunity for an ambitious professional to take the reins of a thriving business.

About the Workshop
  • Team: 4 Technicians, 1 MOT Tester
  • Facilities: 4 ramps, Class 7 MOT bay, 2 new LCV ramps
  • Clients: Retail, fleet contracts (Class 7 focus), government fleet accounts, internal car sales, and large rental companies
  • Growth Potential: Recent investments in new equipment reflect a commitment to expanding capabilities and customer offerings.
As Workshop Manager, you will:
  • Oversee Daily Operations: Efficiently plan and manage incoming work, allocating tasks to technicians, and ensuring deadlines are met.
  • Drive Productivity: Monitor performance metrics, implement improvements, and motivate the team to excel.
  • Account Management: Handle contracts with key clients, including bodyshop coordination and fleet management.
  • Promote Growth: Generate additional service and repair opportunities by leveraging available channels.
  • Recruit & Develop Staff: Identify and hire skilled technicians in line with business growth while supporting team development.
  • Customer Service: Build strong client relationships through exceptional communication and service delivery.
  • Hands-On Leadership: Lead by example, rolling up your sleeves when necessary to support the team.
  • Maintain Standards: Uphold health and safety regulations, ensure a clean and organised workshop, and deliver quality workmanship.
The ideal candidate will have:
  • Proven experience in a similar role (Workshop Manager, Controller, Senior Technician, etc.).
  • Strong technical knowledge, including diagnostics and fault-finding.
  • Leadership skills with the ability to inspire and guide a team.
  • Proficiency in workshop management systems (e.g., Techman).
  • A customer-focused mindset and excellent communication skills.
  • Confidence to make decisions and seek second opinions when required.
  • Valid UK driving licence (manual) and hybrid training (Level 3 or 4 preferred).
  • A proactive, hands-on approach with a “can-do” attitude.
