Car Buyers are responsible for supporting the core sales operation by purchasing high quality vehicles at the right price. With this in mind, they should have excellent negotiations skills, a strong understanding of the automotive sales process and be able to build rapport easily.
Working within a Main Dealership, a Car Buyer will generally travel to various locations in order to source the right vehicles. This is a competitive job as Dealerships will be competing to get the best prices on vehicles in order to make as higher margin possible through resale.
The role of a Car Buyer is one that is very varied, and whilst it concentrates mainly on purchasing vehicles, it is also a role that encompasses relationship building and budget management. A minimum requirement for this role is a full UK Driving license.
Typical working hours for this type of role are generally higher due to the amount of travel involved, so can reach up to 48 hours per week and this can involve working weekends as and when required. Career progression for a Car Buyer is varied and depends largely on the skills of the individual. For example, someone with exceptionally strong people skills may choose to transfer these to a career in the Service Department and become a Service Advisor, Service Team Leader and eventually Service Manager. Alternatively, someone with great negotiation skills may decide the Sales Department is for them and work their way up from Sales Administrator, Sales Executive or Sales Controller to Sales Manager.
