The role of a mechanic is one that is highly physical and requires skill and expertise as well as qualifications. These qualifications typically include minimum level 2 City & Guilds, NVQ or IMI accreditation in Light Vehicle Mechanics.
What is the work like for a Vehicle Technician?
Depending on your working environment, your day to day activities as a Vehicle Technician will vary; however, typically you will be performing regular scheduled vehicle servicing, maintenance and repairs on a wide variety of vehicles. You will typically work alone, although will be part of a team, whose size will vary from 2 to 30 depending on the size of the business and you could be servicing and repairing a range of vehicles including Motorcycles, Cars, Vans, LCVs, HGVs, Trucks and Buses and Coaches. With over 30 million vehicles serviced each year – the role of a Vehicle Technician is a very busy one.
As a motor technician for Light Vehicles, you can typically expect to be working 40 hours week, Monday to Friday with Saturdays on a Rota Basis.
In your career as a Vehicle Technician, you will be expected to complete a motor mechanic apprenticeship, from there you will be working as a Service Technician. Further development and experience gained will progress your Auto Technician career onto that of a Diagnostic Technician, Senior Technician and onto Master Technician.
