I Can See Clearly Now My Test Is Done

Industry news

Three police forces, Thames Valley, Hampshire and West Midlands, have announced that they are trialling a new system. This will involve them asking drivers they have stopped if they can read a number plate 20 metres away from the roadside.

Most of you will remember that at the start of your practical driving test you have to correctly read a number plate on a parked vehicle that is 20m away. If you couldn’t do that, you automatically fail your driving test, and it won’t continue. Not only that but DVLA is told and your licence revoked.

This will have been the only point in your driving career that you will have had a vision test performed. It is estimated that nearly a third of motorists do not meet the legal standard of eyesight to drive. These motorists are responsible for almost 2,900 casualties every year.

When you add into the mix the estimated 1.5 million drivers on the roads that have never had an eye-test you can start to see the bigger problem.

Throughout September, Police plan to stop drivers and put them through a vision test on the network of roads throughout these counties. Data collected from this will be used to highlight the poor driver eyesight issue in the UK, something that is grossly underreported in government statistics.

While this is a brilliant way to crack down on those driving with defective eyesight, tests like this do not count for those who have issues with their peripheral vision. Vision Express and Brake are two campaigners that want the government to act on driver vision laws, as well as mandatory testing every time a driving licence is renewed.

But is every ten years enough?

Often those who are regular contact lenses or glasses wearers are aware of their visual capabilities. I know that when I put my glasses on everything suddenly looks like it is in HD. Those who have never had an eye test or worn glasses may not realise that their vision isn’t up to standard. Simply because they haven’t got a point of comparison.

What are your thoughts on this latest crackdown?

Will you prioritise getting your eyes tested to make sure your vision is up to scratch when driving?
