The role of a Bodyshop Estimator is a hands-on one. The main duties involve assessing accident damaged vehicles, creating estimates, negotiating repair costs with Insurers and liaising with the customer to determine their needs. Your role will be to maximise the Body Centre profitability through the use of professional sales techniques whilst ensuring the highest level of customer care and satisfaction are met at all times.
As an Estimator you will work within a Bodyshop, this could be part of a Main Dealership or an independently owned Accident Repair Centre. Typically, you will report to the Workshop Controller and will be required to assist in the overall running of the workshop; offering support to customers and other members of the Bodyshop team.
Most Estimators will work with a wide range of vehicles and manufacturers so knowledge and understanding are key to this role. There is also an element of administration involved as an Estimator, as you will be expected to maintain customer records as well as document all warranty work. Employers generally require candidates to have experience of using estimating software and some will ask for an ATA Accreditation.
The role of an Estimator is target driven and has scope for growth and promotion for the right person. The career path for an experienced and ambitious Estimator could lead to Workshop Controller, Quality Controller right up to Bodyshop Manager.
Typical working hours for an Estimator can be up to 45 hours per week, typically Monday to Friday but could involve working an occasional Saturday as and when required. Salaries can reach up to £35k depending on the location of the Bodyshop and experience of the individual and most will have the opportunity to earn a bonus.
